Brad Greenwell

My work centers around my fascination with reality as an interior construction, experienced differently by every individual. i do not believe in objectivity. I believe in emptiness. My paintings reflect this emptiness in the room that allows the paintings within the paintings (self-constructed reality) to exist.

I use representational methods to achieve non-representational means. I want to seduce the viewer with the possibility of objectivity, but in the end, deny it. I do not want to perpetuate the sanctity of iconography but deteriorate it. I want the supposed "objectiveness" of the symbol used to break down. Any meaning gleaned is a reflection of the viewer, and obviously so. It is a collage of empty iconography and symbols, empowered by the viewer, meaningless to the painting.

Experimentation is a large part of my process in the studio and the application of paint in the construction of my work is just as important as the visual vernacular. I am interested in creating paintings that have a sculptural feel, creating paintings that seem three dimensional. I am not interested in hyper or photo realism, but in realism that portrays objects as the eye would naturally see them.
